GETTING STARTED

Getting Started

What is BoxOwl?

BoxOwl is a home and personal inventory system designed to help you remember what you have and exactly where you put it. Create your locations, organize your belongings, BoxOwl them, and find them later.

What should I create first in BoxOwl?

Start with a Location, such as your home, garage, office, storage unit, dorm, or another place where you keep things. From there, you can add spaces, boxes or containers as needed and begin adding the things you want BoxOwl to remember.

Do all my items need to be inside a box?

No. A box is optional; a location is not. Large items such as bicycles, furniture, skis, tools, or equipment can belong directly to a location or space without being placed inside a box or container.

What does “BoxOwl it” mean?

To “BoxOwl it” means to save what you have and where it is in BoxOwl, so you’ll know exactly where to find it later.

What is the BoxOwl method?

The BoxOwl method is simple: SET IT UP → ORGANIZE IT → MARK IT → BOXOWL IT → STORE IT → FIND IT. The goal is to make putting things away just as useful as finding them later.

Do I need special equipment to get started?

No. One of the ideas behind BoxOwl is that you can get started with something as simple as your phone and a marker. You can mark a box with an easy identifier such as B4 or Kitchen 002 and match that identifier in BoxOwl.

Can I use BoxOwl without QR labels?

Yes. QR labels are optional. They are a convenient way to connect physical storage with BoxOwl, but they are not required. A handwritten or printed identifier works too.

Can I organize more than one home or property?

Yes, within the location limit of your membership. Locations can represent homes, garages, storage units, offices, dorms, workshops, trailers, or other places where you keep belongings.

ORGANIZING & FINDING

Organizing & Finding

What counts as a Location?

A Location is a top-level place where your belongings live—for example, Home, Garage, Storage Unit, Office, Dorm, Workshop, or Vacation Home. You can then organize more specifically inside that location.

Can I create spaces inside a Location?

Yes. BoxOwl is designed to support more detailed organization so you can represent the way your real spaces actually work.

What can I use as a box or container?

Anything that helps describe where something is stored: cardboard boxes, plastic bins, totes, drawers, cabinets, shelves, trunks, toolboxes, or other containers.

How should I name or mark my boxes?

Use identifiers that are easy to see and remember. Simple codes such as A1, B4, C2, or Kitchen 002 work well. The physical mark and the BoxOwl record should match.

Can I move an item later?

Yes. When something moves, update its BoxOwl location so the digital record continues to match the physical world.

Can I move a whole box?

BoxOwl is designed around boxes and containers belonging to locations. When you relocate a container, update its location so the items associated with it remain organized correctly.

How do I find something I’ve saved?

Use Global Search to search across your BoxOwl inventory. BoxOwl can show the saved path to the item so you know where to look.

What if I forget the exact name of an item?

Use the words you naturally associate with it. Helpful descriptions, categories, notes, and photos can make an item easier to recognize and find later.

Can I keep quantities and notes?

Yes. BoxOwl supports useful item details such as quantity, notes, descriptions, categories, and—on plans that include them—photos.

What happens when I no longer own an item?

Items can be removed from your active inventory. BoxOwl also includes a Removed Items area so deleted or removed records can be handled separately from the things you currently own.

VOICE, AI & PROFESSOR OWLGUSTUS

Voice, AI & Professor Owlgustus

What is Add by Voice?

Add by Voice is designed to make inventory entry faster. Instead of typing every item individually, you can speak multiple items, review what BoxOwl understood, and save them.

Can I ask BoxOwl where something is?

BoxOwl is being built around fast search and voice-friendly access to your inventory. The goal is to make finding an item feel as natural as asking where you put it.

Will BoxOwl work with Alexa, Gemini and Siri?

Alexa, Gemini and Siri integrations are planned features. Exact availability and capabilities will depend on the supported platforms at launch and as BoxOwl evolves.

Are the voice-assistant integrations available right now?

They are planned integrations. BoxOwl will announce supported assistants and specific capabilities as those integrations are completed and released.

Who is Professor Owlgustus?

Professor Owlgustus is BoxOwl’s Chief Organization Owl: proper, meticulous, and deeply committed to restoring order to suspiciously unlabeled boxes. On the Help page, you can ask him questions about using BoxOwl.

Can Professor Owlgustus see everything in my account?

Professor Owlgustus should only use the information and context necessary to provide the BoxOwl help or feature you request. How AI and voice information is processed is described in the BoxOwl Privacy Policy.

Can AI or voice features make mistakes?

Yes. Speech recognition and AI can misunderstand a request or return an imperfect answer. Review important inventory information and confirm that saved locations and item details are correct.

QR LABELS, PHOTOS & SCANNING

QR Labels, Photos & Scanning

What are BoxOwl QR labels for?

QR labels provide a quick way to connect a physical box or location with its BoxOwl record. Scan the code to get to the information associated with it.

Do I have to buy BoxOwl labels?

No. QR labels are optional, and the BoxOwl approach is intentionally designed so you can organize without needing a special label printer or proprietary sticker system.

Can I just write on a box with a Sharpie?

Absolutely. That simplicity is part of the BoxOwl idea. Mark the box with an identifier, use the same identifier in BoxOwl, and you have a practical connection between the physical box and your digital inventory.

Can I add photos to items?

Yes, on BoxOwl plans that include item images. Photos can make belongings easier to recognize and can be useful for items that are difficult to describe.

Does OWLET include item images?

No. OWLET is designed as the simplest, most affordable tier and does not include item images. Item images begin with OWLSOME.

PLANS, PRICING & MEMBERSHIPS

Plans, Pricing & Memberships

How much is OWLET?

OWLET is planned at $3.99 per month or $39 per year. It includes up to 3 locations, 50 boxes or containers, and 1,000 inventory items, without item images.

How much is OWLSOME?

OWLSOME is planned at $7.99 per month or $79 per year. It includes up to 10 locations, 250 boxes or containers, 5,000 inventory items, and 2,500 item images.

How much is OWLMIGHTY?

OWLMIGHTY is planned at $12.99 per month or $129 per year. It includes up to 30 locations, 1,000 boxes or containers, 20,000 inventory items, and 10,000 item images.

Can I pay monthly or annually?

Yes. OWLET, OWLSOME, and OWLMIGHTY are planned with both monthly and discounted annual billing options.

What happens if I need more capacity?

You can move to a larger BoxOwl tier. BoxOwl uses generous defined limits rather than promising unlimited storage.

Can I share one membership with multiple families?

No. BoxOwl consumer memberships are intended for one household or immediate family and their personal belongings. They are not intended to cover unrelated households, businesses, organizations, or communities.

Is BoxOwl for businesses too?

The current consumer memberships are designed for households and immediate families. BoxOwl may develop separate business offerings for organizations that need a different kind of account structure or capacity.

FOUNDING LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP

Founding Lifetime Membership

What is the Founding Lifetime Membership?

It is a limited one-time $399 membership planned for BoxOwl’s earliest supporters. Only 500 Founding Lifetime Memberships are planned, with defined household, item, location, container, and image limits.

Will the Founding Lifetime Membership be available on Kickstarter?

That is the plan. BoxOwl intends to use Kickstarter as a launch platform, with the limited Lifetime Membership offered as a founding reward. Final campaign availability and terms will be confirmed at launch.

What does “lifetime” mean?

The final purchase terms will control. The current Terms of Service define a lifetime membership as access to the covered BoxOwl plan for the operational life of the BoxOwl consumer Service, rather than a guarantee that the Service will operate indefinitely.

Does the Lifetime Membership mean unlimited storage?

No. The Founding Lifetime Membership is planned with defined limits comparable to the premium household plan: up to 30 locations, 1,000 boxes or containers, 20,000 inventory items, and 10,000 item images.

Will Founding Lifetime Memberships be transferable?

The final launch terms will control. The current Terms of Service describe lifetime memberships as personal and non-transferable unless BoxOwl expressly allows otherwise.

Devices, Accounts & Access

Will I be able to use BoxOwl on iPhone and Android?

BoxOwl is being designed for mobile and web access. Store availability, purchasing options, and launch details will be announced as release approaches.

Can I use BoxOwl on the web?

Can my family use BoxOwl?

BoxOwl consumer memberships are designed for one household or immediate family. The exact account-sharing and family-access experience may evolve as BoxOwl develops.

What happens if I change phones?

Your BoxOwl account is intended to keep your inventory associated with your account rather than one particular device. Sign in on a supported device to access your account, subject to available sync and platform features.

Can I export my inventory?

BoxOwl is designed with data export options so you can keep a copy of your inventory information. Available formats and capabilities may evolve.

ABOUT BOXOWL

About BoxOwl

Why was BoxOwl created?

Who owns and operates BoxOwl?

BoxOwl is currently owned and operated by SERVING Holdings LLC.

What is BoxOwl’s mission?

BoxOwl exists to make the physical world searchable: to help people know what they have, know where it is, and spend less time searching for the things they already own.

Yes. BoxOwl is being built as a purpose-driven business. Its founder has committed to using a significant portion of BoxOwl profits to support mission and service work, with a particular focus on community work in Costa Rica.
